By Farah Fan

Hip hop apparel is a multi-million dollar industry since fans want to dress like their favorite hip hop artist. They want to sing as well and become as wealthy as their favorite hip hop artist. Hip hop music first began during the seventies in Bronx, New York. Among the first of its audience were African and Latin American.

Since then hip hop music evolved into a cultural movement, famous for its influence on music in the form of the musical genre. The culture of hip-hop has gone from being a relatively underground style to being a major style throughout the world, and it has been commercialized and popularized, particularly in the United States.

Hip Hop music is a genre that uses rhythmic beats to accompany a lead rapping vocal. This is a very popular genre. Today, many aspects of hip hop culture have become mainstream, and it is popular not only in the inner cities, but also the suburbs and internationally. The main characteristic of Hip Hop music is clear beats, which are often in the 4/4 musical signature. This type of beat is sometimes accompanied with rap vocals. The typical beat in hip hop is sampled or combined. A DJ will take previously made beats with electronics or other add on and mix them with others to create a unique beat for a particular song.

Since hip hop was new during the seventies there was not hip hop fashion since the genre was fairly new. Although, there were some minor fashion in accessories trends that were coming out for example large sunglasses, gold chains with medium or large medallions. For shoes, Chuck Taylors and Adidas sneakers with big fat shoelaces with different color. During the early eighties a rap group by the name of Run-DMC became well known in the music industry. They also created their own trendsetting fashion as their musical breakthroughs. During the late eighties the high top jeans faded and preppy came to hip hop fashion. Branded clothing became in fashion, while hip hop artist would state their favorite clothing designer in their songs. Then something happened, hip hop preppy faded fast and soon came the African style. African Americans wore Africa medallions, gold jewelry on their neck, ears, bracelets and rings. Clothes had red-black-green color combination of the Pan-African flag or African aesthetic inspiration. Some stars had their individualized styles, such as N.W.A's Chuck Taylor sneakers, Oakland Raiders baseball caps and LL Cool J's Kangol hat.

With hip hop artist getting popular and the music growing, hip hop culture took over the music industry. Slang terminology was created like "bling" meaning diamonds or jewelry with diamonds. On music videos successful hip hop artist will show hundreds of dollar to show fans that they have cash. By mid-2000s, hip hop fashion diversified to include platinum grills, throwback jerseys and extra-large white shirts, tight jeans and t-shirts. The truth is famous fashion designers and hip hop artists are creating their own fashion collection for hip hop fans.
