The fame of the movies and acting talent of Nandita Das is not only well-known in India but has also reached an international arena. She personifies the modern Indian woman who stands up against unfairness in the social set up in her own ways and tries to make people conscious of the practices that have to be changed. Through her films and unconventional roles that she has done on big screen, she attempts to bring forth the unnoticed problems, feelings and confusions of human beings.
Nandita Das entered film industry through Parinati, an Oriya movie, in 1996. However the public began noting her after she portrayed a role in Fire by Deepa Mehta. Through the character of Sita, she without any inhibition, enacted a homosexual person. She skillfully portrays the dilemmas and family situation of a woman whose desires are being unnoticed by her husband. She gets her companion in her sister-in-law who also lives in the same house, who undergoes similar situation. Their need for comfort and mental space makes them accept their relationship and they start living together.
She has chosen films which dealt with issues and societal norms in a fresh way. Her degree in social work and the experience with many non-profit organizations has made her understand the social set up and other governmental organizations better. Her characters - some of them being Sanwari, Sajani, Kannaki, Nandini Mitra, Shanta, Shyama - capture various feelings of a woman. Many of her films are based on problems and has complex subjects.
She was deeply affected by the riots in Gujarat (2002), seeing the altered life of people of many religions and societal response to it. By relating many true stories related to the Gujarat riots, she made with Firaaq, her directorial debut. This film portrays lives of different people who are on the look out for their Loved ones and dear ones, lost someone or are stunned by the riot. The film was honored with best film awards and best screenplay in several national and international award functions.

She actively participates in in changing the age old methods of society and also gives lectures on many topics like AIDS, issues related to children and harassment against women in society, apart from acting. She is also the chair person of Children's Film Society of India.
Nandita Das is daughter to writer Varsha and well-known painter Jatin das. In Delhi where she has been residing, she joined a theatre group after her studies. She was also teaching besides that. She got married to Subodh Maskara and they have a son named Vihaan.
